Pink lakes of Kherson region showed Ukrainian photographerat Sony World Photo Awards Odesa photographer Jewhen Samuchenko presented Ukraine in the professional category of the largest international photo contest Sony World Photo Awards.

In particular, Yevhen showed a series of photos “At the Pink Planet”, captured on the salt lakes of the Kherson region, namely – Pink and Lemurian.

Series description “The first time you see the pink salt lakes of the Kherson region in Ukraine it feels as though you are looking at another planet. During the summer months, microscopic algae cause the water to turn pink and red. The view from above is literally out of this world, which is why I chose to use a drone to convey the atmosphere of this unusual place”.

The pink color of the water is caused by the activity of monocellular algae Dunaliella saltwater, which produces beta-carotene under the effect of the sun. The hotter summer feels, the more water evaporates from the lake and the more saturated the color of the salt. As the water falls back, it leaves a ton of white salt “sand” on the shore. The white shore and the pink lake make an indelible impression, turning this part of the Kherson region into one of the most picturesque and mysterious places in Ukraine.

This year 135,000 images from 163 countries were submitted for the contest.

  1. Having read this I thought it was very enlightening. I appreciate you spending some time and energy to put this content together. I once again find myself spending way too much time both reading and leaving comments. And the story about this guy and about Ukraine in general. I read about Oleshkivski desert. Could you please write about that as well?
