Mask use will be compulsory on public transport throughout Germany

All federal states have announced plans to make face masks compulsory to combat the spread of coronavirus starting from Monday. The measure will be will apply to public places, shops and public transport.

Bremen was the last federal state to support this initiative. The local parliament must confirm the decision on Friday.

All types of masks including self-made, fabric masks and scarves are allowed in Germany.

The Robert Koch Institute recommends on its website: “A mask or scarf should be worn tightly on the mouth and nose; it should not be touched, taken off or simply worn around the neck”.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged last week everyone to wear masks.
