Starting this week, all federal states introduced an obligation to wear protective masks on public transport and during shopping. The federal government urgently recommends wearing the protective masks. The implementation of the regulation is the responsibility of the federal states.
From now on, there is a compulsory wearing of protective masks in all German states. Mouth and nose must be covered when using public transport in all federal states. This obligation also applies to shopping. Saxony was a first in introducing compulsory masks. Most of the federal states have introduced it this Monday, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania the obligation has been in force since Wednesday.
Self-made everyday masks can be used as protection. Covering nose and mouth with scarves or cloths is also allowed. Compliance with the regulations is mostly not checked at first. However, Bavaria fines the violation of the obligation to wear masks with 150 euros, NRW allows the amount of the fine to be set by the local authorities.
According to recommendations of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), wearing so-called non-medical everyday masks can reduce the risk of infections. In particular, they protect others if the wearer should be infected with the corona virus. Nevertheless, the RKI emphasizes that mouth-nose masks only provide additional protection and do not replace other measures.
